  • Cunningham Falls State Park – Two camp areas near the lake and the waterfall; family-friendly with swim beach and trails. Best for: paddling by day, campfire by night.

  • Gambrill State Park – Mountain-ridge campground with overlooks and classic Maryland hardwood forest. Best for: hikers who want a quiet, woodsy base.

  • C&O Canal Hiker–Biker Campsites (NPS) – Rustic, first-come, first-served sites every ~6–8 miles; each has a picnic table, grill, and seasonal water pump (typically Apr–Nov).

    • Nearest to our routes: Marble Quarry, Indian Flats, Turtle Run, White Rock, Horsepen Branch. Best for: minimalist overnights, multi-day paddle/bike touring.

Pro tip: Hiker–biker water-hand-pumps are seasonal—carry backup water or a filter, and follow "Leave No Trace" rules.
